Five Domain Name Mishaps

Have you ever experienced trying to remember a particular domain name but cannot do so because it is too long or too fancy? Well then you must learn from that experience. A domain name is like a house address; if one word or number is missing then you are expected to lose your way.

Domain names serve as an address or a guide for internet consumers to be able to find that particular website. Remember to choose the right domain name because once it is registered you can no longer change it. Here are some domain name mistakes you should avoid as much as possible.

1. Irrelevant. Avoid using domain names that are irrelevant for your business. This will only confuse consumers and might end up ruining your budding business. Remember that possible clients are always looking for something, so your domain name should coincide as much as possible to your business whether you are selling clothes, shoes, fashion accessories, real estate or others. Give the clients what they expect so that they will get interested and end up doing business with you rather than deserting your site as soon as they open it because it is not what they expected.

2. Too fancy. This will surely get someone lost in the internet jungle. Avoid using domain names that are fancy. When a domain name is too fancy, it would be too hard to remember. Avoid using special characters or initials for your domain name because people won't be able to keep this in their heads and they might end up forgetting it and typing a different domain name instead. Fancy may be appealing but then again you don't need that when you are making a domain name.

3. Too long. If your business name is too long then you might want to use something else as a domain name. You can use the items you sell as a domain name. Long domain names are hard to remember and most of the time confusing. Plus, domain names that are too long take a lot of time when you type it on the address bar. In addition, people might end up typing the wrong letter or word because they get confused with all the word fused into that particular domain name. Short and specific domain names are easier to remember.

4. Double meanings or funny sounding domain names. You may be required to make your domain names as short as possible so that it will be easier to remember but please avoid making a domain name that sounds like a joke. Yes, some domain names end up as subjects for people who simply want to have a good laugh. Domain names with double meanings can be very embarrassing because the results are usually funny and hilarious. Domain names should embody credibility, reliability and responsibility and those with double meanings or those that sound funny don't embody the said characteristics.

5. Infringement. This is another domain name mistake which usually takes place when you or your site uses an existing domain name trademark. Each domain name has to be unique and different because if not, you might end up in court paying all the fees rather than making business. If you are going to use a logo, do not copy or modify any existing website or company logo. Make your own.
