Seven Things To Consider When Registering Your Domain

Since most people today are going online, having your own domain on the world wide web is surely an advantage. Yet, before you can call a domain your own you will have to register it. Here are some things you should consider when registering your domain.

1. Accreditation. This is important if you don't want to waste your money on something that cannot be yours or something that will surely give you a headache especially when it comes to legal matters. Before you buy or register a domain, make sure that the company you are registering to has the proper accreditation. If the registrar or the company that is offering you a domain is accredited by organizations like ICANN, then you are given the assurance that these companies are legitimate and that they had signed up to a lot of contractual obligations just to get accredited.

2. Log-in page. If the company you are registering your domain to or the company offering you a domain is requiring you to provide a username and password, then you are assured because that company is following one of the basic steps in order to secure web transactions. Having your own username and password will keep other people with malicious intent out of your account. This will also prevent them from using the information you have cited to their advantage.

3. Security. Of course, when you are registering something, you will have to pay the appropriate fees. Since this transaction is done through the net, you will then have to use your credit card in order to pay. Before you divulge anything especially your credit card information, first make sure that the site is secure. You can check for security by clicking on the padlock symbol found on the address bar in order to view the site's security certificate.

4. Registrar Lock. If the company is offering this, use it to your advantage. This is important because it keeps off individuals who simply want to mess with your business by messing up with your domain. With a lock, an individual cannot change your domain information without your permission.

5. Fees. A lot of people have been fooled by hidden costs and fees. When you are registering your domain, be sure that you are properly informed about the fees that you are going to pay. It should be stated clearly and well defined. Some companies offer very cheap registration fees but then you end up paying more because you will have to pay for additional costs, most of which are not stated on the registration form or website. Fees do not only mean registration fees; other fees like renewal fees or transfer fees should also be clearly stated.

6. Renewal. You don't register your domains for an infinite period of time; instead, you register them for a certain period only. Once you have reached the end of this particular period you will then have to renew your registration. Some companies offer auto-renewal and multiple renewal notifications. These options can surely help you keep track of your domain.

7. Contact number and customer service. Of course, the company you registered your domain to must have its contact information posted. This will allow you to easily contact them whenever you have questions or are having trouble with your domain. If the company does not post its contact information then you might want to reconsider things.
